Drilled and slotted rotors explained
So do I need slotted, drilled or drilled and slotted rotors?

I will tell you a true life experience; I drive my truck a lot, about 50,000 miles a year. It always has about 2000 pounds on it. I live out side Washington DC and drive all over DC, when it was time for pads I would just get rotors because they would be warped by then. This is when you step on the brake and get vibration or the pedal goes up and down. I don't believe in getting them turned because smooth rotors are designed to be heat sinks. When you cut them down you have less heat sink and they warp faster. I decided to try drilled and slotted rotors to see what happens. I went 4 sets of pads before I needed new rotors. So that's all I get now. The reason it benefits me is all the stop and go I do with a lot of weight.

Slotted rotors have slots cut in them, they are designed to let heat and gases escape. If you do a lot of hard braking ( like race track hard ) these help keep things cool. As far as the gases older pads would give off gases when they got hot and cause brake fade. Today most will tell you this is not a problem.

Drilled rotors look good behind some nice rims. They vent gases and heat through the holes. But they have about the same purpose as slotted rotors. Just a different design. Some people say they can crack in-between the holes. I never had this happen.
First understand the difference, smooth rotors are what they sound like they come on most cars today
and stop your car good for normal driving. Most cars today have anti-locking brakes and after your anti-locking system takes over it dose not matter what kind of rotors, brake pads or calipers you have on your car or truck it is going to take the same amount of time to stop.

Drill and slotted rotors: look even better behind nice rims. Most will tell you these are not good for racing people say they won't hold up. But for heavy use they work good. The rotors stay cooler and that keeps the rotors from becoming distorted or warped. Warped is what happens when steel is heated  and cooled repeatedly.  For me I will always get drilled and slotted rotors for my truck.
